Friendship

by Deb Strafuss August 15, 2014

                                         For Ingrid & Laura

Delicate dewdrops

Fragrance and flowers

Peaceful the stillness

Of cherished hours

Spent in the bonds

Of friendship’s love

Storied by shared lives.

Two intertwined in time

Exploring the here and divine

Holding hands

Through every thoroughfare

Through every storm they have dared

To love and respect and care

For the treasure of being there

 For each other.

 Two friends

Forever bound

With love the cord that holds

Beyond the widening gulf of pain

That will this pathway end.

There is a beginning again

When one has a treasured friend.

In Honor of Maya

by Deb Strafuss May 29, 2014
I wrote this in the summer of 2010. It is the right time to share it, as Maya was its inspiration…. God bless the lighted souls who share their spirits with us here. Maya was one such soul, lit by the tears of grief and fear, deepened by the experiences of life to a vibration of soul that resonated deeply with many. She played us like orchestral strings with her words. We thank her for being here.

Summer Dreams

I wish a poet laureate to be

with some sweet form of melody

ringing from the heart unstressed

through aught within

unstopped, expressed

Flowing through – unfiltered, clean

the pure images of what is seen

felt and throught – spoken and taught

named and nameless deeds been wrought

I wish a poet laureate to be

A clear, sparkling mirror

of reality!

Tragedy

by Deb Strafuss July 11, 2011

So Sad…

A lass and a lad….

 A relationship gone bad

A terrible wiry twist

          Unraveled fate –

                  Interrupted bliss

And a lover’s kiss

                 turned to death

The horror of parting,

      new lives starting

                   torn apart by wroth

Traveled darkness’ path

                                and turned

          from love’s fancy found

to tragedy’s blood upon the ground….

Two lives

           just beginning

                                        ended

Two journeys begun

never tended

                             with what could be found

                               of true love’s ground

Traced the patterns of

passion and fate

          where love dissolves into hate

                    and life becomes the gate

         to insanity

         pain

                            and death

Never a chance

for patience’s true breath

                           gentle waters

                                                   to clear and flow

cause love that’s true to bloom and grow

Two lives, newly begun,

                                        undone.

Elizabeth

by Deb Strafuss March 24, 2011
Wisteria

Elizabeth has left us

A perfectly timed exit she made

Amidst the month of history

Where women are on parade.

She says her final lines and leaves –

Exits as winter recedes

And leaves us gasping once more for breath

Over timing, and perfection, and loss and death.

Our lives are richer because she came

Gave her everything, played the game

Lived her life out in the public eye

Entertaining us through years gone by.

No privacy or humility left to her

She played her parts with dignity and grace

Giving us great watching, good gossip and space

To unwind, compare our lives to hers

And make our judgments daily based

Upon our own perceptions and place.

Sometimes she was the heroine, the pariah of the heights

Sometimes she was the harlot slut

Dirty down and out

We felt so much superior, or knew we weren’t despised

Because somewhere in her repertoire

She lived out our lives,

Or we lived hers…

Amazing Ab Woman….

by Deb Strafuss March 14, 2011
If I go to the gym early enough…
She is there
Working her abs till the sweat drips off her back.
Where does she come from?
Where does she go?
These are things I may never know

But whenever she’s here
she inspires, it’s clear
I wince and I scrunch
to see her crunch
every ab until it’s defined

I admire her strength – her perseverance more
That she pushes herself beyond what is there
doesn’t flinch, doesn’t stop
Inspiring me to count the cost
and pay it.

Sunlight

I am inspired to honor amazing everyday women this month. They are all around us all the time, in many little ways. Take some time to look at yourself – you may be amazed at who you find, hiding behind the stuff of your ordinary self. A person of courage and strength, hope, dignity and care, intelligent, creative – be all that you can be, let yourself out and share. The rest of us can only be enriched by the gifts that you dare!

Aung San Suu Kyi

by Deb Strafuss March 8, 2011

It is National Women’s History Month

I did not even know one existed until I was asked to participate

Here I honor not women who have made history, but women who are making history.

Nationally – internationally – those who live for it, and those who have died for it. The political leaders of countries we would count  as less feministically advanced than us, yet whose heroes are female political leaders who have sacrificed their families and their lives for their countries…

Aung San Suu Kyi – you will not hear as much about her as you will Nelson Mandela

Yet she has paid her nation’s price in 18 years of imprisonment, separated from her two sons and husband, to stand for democracy and freedom in Burma

Why is democracy and freedom in Burma of any importance to us snuggled here in the states??

Because what enlarges one enlarges the world, and what diminishes one, diminishes the world.

Whether we know it or not, feel it or not, see it or not, believe it or not….

We are connected…………………….

Here’s to the courage of woman – as brave and as strong and as free

as any of man that would see or be

spirit is the same

it knows not face or name

nor race

nor sex

nor anything in between

It simply is what it seems

Cry of the people

by Deb Strafuss February 11, 2011

It is so hard, from such a distance and from the outside, to see or judge clearly – to make gray areas black and white – yet the voice of the people raised in Egypt reminds me of one raised many thousands of years ago in the same place by the Hebrew people enslaved there….”Let my People Go”…

Are we standing on the edge of witnessing, once again, the profound power of the people to claim their freedom? Will we see a
