Venus Transit

by Deb Strafuss June 6, 2012

The Queen

The Queen marks her 60th year of reign

as Venus passes the sun again

Women celebrate with style

Their unique and beautiful power

While the World watches and waits

for a visit from the fates

The Goddesses of old

have long been foretold

to be the vessels of our faith.

Hope and Love their birth on earth..

our hearts in harmony, wait…

Spring?

by Deb Strafuss June 3, 2012

It’s June
Breezy and sixty – like me
the neighbors have their wood stove on
the chimes are beating furiously
their tune
I huddle inside my sweatshirt
and try
to think up a seasonal mind
October or November is
today
whipping the warmth away
infusing fall’s blustery tones
on budded spring’s beauty grown.

I give up, and retreat back inside
listen to the wind cry,
nurse my wounded spring….

Kodalith Kries

by Deb Strafuss March 25, 2012

Spider veined to the skySpring trees

Yearning branches Cry

“Oh Spring of everything

within me try!”

Lift and push and peel away

winter’s dying decaying day

surging within my sleeping veins

Spring re-works it’s way to gain,

upon a world re-born each day,

it’s magic in the air we breathe –

the life of newness re-conceived.

Deep down amidst dry branches brown

and parched with winter’s pain,

lifted up against that backdrop – Spring

brings Life and Hope to living things….

Drumming the Fires of Spring

by Deb Strafuss March 21, 2012

I have recently discovered the joys of drumming the moons and the seasons of Earth

Sunday night I could not join my sisters in the tipi, but celebrated the advent of Spring with my brother in our yard under the full spring night sky. Greeting Venus and Jupiter in the East, Mars in the West, viewing Beetlejuice in the belt of Orion and gazing on the red dwarf giant eye of his friend Taurus, the bull; I danced with the seven sisters of the Plieades, whose number I counted at 24  – the sky is full of sister stars  – and viewed the birthplace of stars in the belt of Orion, the nebula known by the Mayans centuries ago, while going back and forth between the eye of the scope and my makeshift drum by the dancing fire….

A ceremony of Spring

Spring FireFire Bowl

Frie LofDrumming Spring:

Oh East!

The breath of our delight!

Air and spirit are your sight.

Bring us to your inner might

rose soft petals in spring’s flight

Oh air! That present here at breath

bears us in it’s moving rest –

Where hawks delight on thee to fly –

Fire Danceseeing clearly from the sky

calling softly as they cry

to us, earth-bound in our nests-

Resting on our Mother’s breast

Clay-born, sightless, wingless forms

here to suck in earth’s deep charms

Oh wind!

Do keep us in your ear

whisper of your journey here

that we may ride with you…

Oh South!

Of passion’s heated fire…

Rise up! Rise up!

And inspire!

Burn our dross and fears away

En-flamed upon a bright new day

Beat heart and soul into our passion

Forge our minds in new impressions

White-hot leaping roaring tide

of fearless flaming burning stride

Illumine all our souls inside

Oh beat the drums of passiontide!

Flame danceOh West!

To you we look

We rush

We glide

Like memories on the morning tide

Oh clear bright morn of evensong

Oh restless calling of the sea

wide-stretched unto eternity –

true rollings thunder on our sand.

Let us, transfixed

grab hold your hand

to sail upon your teaming shores

Abundancy within your roars

Let us respond with open hearts

to greet your cool-washed shores of love.

Oh Mother, North to thee we come!

Keeper of the lover’s womb –light flame

Barren of our cares and faults

Oh Mother, Northland of our birth

to thee we turn

the air-wind-fire-swept sea does toss

its heart at you,

and is not lost –

upon your comfort cold-kept shores

beyond all cares,

roiled and trodden in the years

Oh heal, Oh Heal

Oh blessed earth

Oh Heal, Oh Heal

in new re-birth

Oh Mother, BlessedFinal Flame

Mother

Earth.

Salute

Salute to the Earth

Salute to my sisters

Salute to the upward skybeing sun

Salute to Spring, begun!

Morning Musings on a Getaway Weekend…

by Deb Strafuss February 29, 2012

We have an annual event – a running away to play weekend – which occurs in Women’s History month, where we make our own – twelve women congregate to share wine, stories, fireside chats, walks, reflections and connections….and a place to be. Surrounded by the unfamiliar beauty of an unfrequented location, each day and view brings new awakenings to mind and heart…

Sun Rise Lake…

A Wintry Scene
painted by icy, blowing fingers
Racing before chilling North winds
Morning blushed clouds begin
      The Day

Frozen branches wave a frosty morn –
if the shore did not hold them back,
the rushing wind waves would be in my lap!

Completely frosted
the paled face of winter’s dawn
coats the landscape and makes it her own.
A roaring train, the wind sweeps all away
to clear a fresh start to the day….

Inspired by Dolphins…

by Deb Strafuss February 18, 2012

Either Spring is close – and with the sunshine and warmth out there today, I strongly suspect that is what has crept into my blood – or the depictions of winter get-away sports on the news has sunk into the longing of my soul…whatever the cause, a joyous romp through the crashing wake of a wake boarder accompanied by a playful pair of dolphins shown on the morning news completely worked its way into my creative center this morning…..

Everything is Spirit Form –

Everything!!! Since the day you were born!Circles of Fish!

Moving in and out of shapes and spaces,

times and places,

Everything means something else!!

represents truths deep felt.

All it’s time and meaning here

are puzzle pieces meant to clear

your vision in another plane,

deepen spirits,

provide gain

to lift us higher, fuller, truer –

bring us life that’s newer.

Breathe that spirit energy fine,

Tune your hearts to the divine,

played in symphonies on strings of time –

Music of the soul’s true Mind…..

Snow Song

by Deb Strafuss February 12, 2012

Yes! I know it was not much – and we have not have a lot this year – and many of us are very happy this way…

Yet I……child of the Great Lakes……miss the snows of winter.

When I awoke this morning to a slight blanket of white – I immediately needed to go out into it, feel the flakes upon my face, walk in the softness of the air….and write…and record…this for you – and me!

Snow Song

Oh there is our beautiful blanket of snow!
Graceful and falling and just letting go –

A winter of dry, gray-brown barren sod gently sleeps,
slips away underneath winter’s soft downy sheets.

A freshness, a cleanness, a healing of time,
but oh, what a blessing from sweet Mother earth
when she heals and covers all that brown dirt –
wipes away all the scars of dead, dying things
to bring us new life with the rising of spring!

Sleep softly and gently deep earth in its cares
Mother is tending and healing our fears
cooling and soothing our souls with her tears,
Soft drops of heaven in gentle snowflakes…

The Trouble with Mondays….

by Deb Strafuss November 7, 2011

It took me six years from writing this poem to leaving this work work to embark upon my own work. This  poem is offered to all of us trapped in our trappings….may we find room to breathe, space to live ; doing what we love and loving what we do

The trouble with Mondays….
is that they begin
The week of the businesses that we are in
Over again and again and again

No matter how hard we dream and remember
The joys of the weekend gone past
Somewhere between Monday and Tuesday
They’re gone with a blast
Of due deadlines and tasks
And things left undone from the week before last

Or the new emergencies of the daily grind
Making the schedule and paperwork kind
Of an offering paid in advance
For the coming weekend’s romance
As it beckons and lures us ahead
Promising once more
…….to be the best yet….

Beautiful Branches

by Deb Strafuss November 4, 2011

As Fall progresses, and we watch and wait with baited breath to see what rating on the scale this year’s display of colors will be, I always experience the November let down as whatever last bountiful beauty of leaf and foliage disappear from view, falling softly and gently, making no sound as they go, or wind-whipped and stripped early from their bower by the force of fall’s early fury and power. This year, I had an amazing experience of watching heavy snow fall on golden leaves, weighting branches almost to the ground; and for the first time I realized the wisdom of Mother Nature who bares our northern branches to sustain our trees through their winter.

My reflections from a journey through the woods last fall, and the journey through the fall season of my own life, bring us – human creatures – and our brother/sister trees into focus….

Bright colors,

Lost leaves…

Everything gives –

soft wonder perceives…                                     Fall in New England

Standing back for a moment to look

at which paths you recently took

brings a musing and wondering stare

at the choices that brought you there

Be awake, and very aware

as you tally your score with care

Did you leaf fall

and burst with color and dare

to live life with its charms and its calls?

At the end of the Fall

when your branches are bare

will they say what a

beautiful form

is left by the life you adorned?
